In 2014, VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System's police department earned a highly satisfactory rating from the VA Office of Security and Law Enforcement.

The 70-officer unit—which includes two canine teams—is the only department in the VA system to receive six top ratings in a row.

"This honor is thanks to my hardworking team of officers," says Police Chief John Jack Crawford. "It's also possible due to the unflagging support of our health care system's leadership, who ensure that we maintain one of the top VA police programs in the nation."

As part of the annual review process, VA Pittsburgh must open up its offices and operations to a rigorous one-week inspection. To prepare for this visit and stay sharp on the job, VA Pittsburgh's officers train year-round for every safety issue imaginable. They are experts in handling criminal investigations, narcotics, explosives, decontamination scenes and active shooter situations. And they are equally adept, says Crawford, at tackling the everyday demands of the job.

"We make it a point to get to know people in our buildings—and to talk with Veterans who come to our facilities for care. Building mutual relationships is a big part of what we do."

Crawford, who has served as chief since 2002, plans to retire from the force later this year. He is confident that, after four decades in the program, he will be leaving a top-notch team to his successor.

"When I was made chief, I was told to get the very best people I can get and I'm proud to say that we've done that," Crawford recalls. "VA Pittsburgh can be justifiably proud of their professional force."

Congratulations on six-straight top ratings, VA Pittsburgh Police!
