National Salute Program Honors Veterans
Veterans in The City of Brotherly Love are being honored and thanked this week for their service during annual National Salute to Veterans activities at the Philadelphia VA Medical Center.
Events include ice cream socials, concerts, visits by area sports mascots and athletes, and Medical Center tours by elected officials. Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter visited Monday morning and met with hundreds of Veterans and VA staff members.
Previously known as National Salute to Hospitalized Veterans, the week was first marked in 1974 and since then has coincided with Valentine’s Day. That’s a big reason the hospital, clinics and Community Living Center are adorned with hearts and cards from school children throughout the Delaware Valley. Veterans and visitors are also receiving carnations.
"It is important to note that our 2,200 employees and 650 volunteers honor our heroes every day," said Joseph M. Dalpiaz, medical center director. "I ask everyone in the community to join us in saluting our Veterans."
