Transplant Program

The VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System (VAPHS) Transplant Program is one of the nation's leading VA transplant centers in the country. Our world-class surgeons have been performing organ transplants here since 1989, including:

  • Liver
  • Kidney
  • Living donor kidney
  • Kidney paired donor exchange
  • Simultaneous liver-kidney transplantation services
  • Small bowel transplants and live donor liver transplants (thru a partnership with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center)

Veteran Voices
"I'm so grateful that I received my kidney transplant and I don't have to live my life on dialysis. I feel that God has given me another chance, and my quality of life is so much better than 8 years ago. Thank God for the donor family and the VA Pittsburgh Transplant Program."

Why Choose VA Pittsburgh Transplant Program?

Increase your likelihood of transplantation

You can dual list in two transplant centers. By choosing two different geographical locations, you increase the likelihood of getting an organ. VA supports dual listing at two VA transplant centers. If you meet eligibility requirements for community transplantation care, you may elect to dual list with a community and VA transplant program.

Getting a transplant within the VA may save you significant expense

Your travel and lodging benefits are paid by VA when your transplant is performed at a VA transplant center. The benefits extend to the transplant candidate, designated support person, and living donor (if applicable) for evaluations, transplant procedures, and follow-up care. Utilizing community care transplant options may result in significant expenses surrounding travel and lodging.

Great coordination of care

Choosing VA for transplants means that all your transplant related information is in the same electronic health record and your entire VA care team can access it, which helps with coordination of your care.

Access care quickly

VA Pittsburgh Transplant Program uses telemedicine to see you quickly and limit your travel.

VAPHS has excellent outcomes

The most recent Scientific Registry for Transplant Recipients (SRTR) metrics from January 2022 list the VAPHS liver and kidney transplant programs above the national average for 1-year patient and graft survival.

VA Pittsburgh has experience with very sick patients

VAPHS is a very aggressive transplant program, selecting older, higher risk patients with more co-morbidities than other VA programs.
